Description

Released by Atari in 1979, Asteroids was one of the first major hits of the golden age of arcade games and is now widely recognised as one of the all-time arcade classics.

With single-player and multi-player modes, and the simple objective of shooting asteroids and saucers whilst avoiding incoming fire, the game proved tremendously popular and inspired many other arcade classics such as Defender and Gravitar.

Over the years many Asteroid machines have either been scrapped or fallen into disrepair, but this rare example has undergone a complete refurbishment over many hours by our specialist engineers, they have restored the cabinet to its former glory and worked meticulously to ensure that the gameplay experience is exactly as it should be.

The game itself was conceived during a meeting between Atari designers Ed Logo and Lyle Rains, who based it on hardware that had been developed for Lunar Lander. Eventually selling over 70,000 units it actually eclipsed the success of Space Invaders in the US market, and at one stage demand put the factory under such pressure that they were forced to ship several hundred Asteroids games in Lunar Lander cabinets.

The all-time high score is held by then 15-year-old Scott Safran of New Jersey who racked up a stratospheric 41,336,440 points in 1982.
