Made by Bally in 1946, the Undersea Raider is a wonderfully theatrical nickel arcade game that puts you at the helm of your own submarine. Peer through the rotating periscope, line up an enemy ship and fire one of your 26 precious torpedoes. A flash races through the depths and, if your aim is good, a loud bell and distant explosion announce a direct hit. Deeply satisfying.

You’re playing against the clock, with just 26 torpedoes at your disposal. Aim carefully. There’s something surprisingly tense about watching one race through the depths towards its target and wondering whether you’ve judged it quite right.

This example has been professionally restored, with its original mechanisms working and the artwork sympathetically touched up rather than made to look suspiciously new. At 80, it has earned the right to show a little of its history and is all the better for it.

From Bally, one of the great names of the golden age of American coin-operated amusement, the Undersea Raider is now exceptionally difficult to find, particularly in this condition. Part arcade game, part wonderful piece of post-war Americana and, frankly, enormous fun.
