Proof that soccer had really kicked off in the USA comes in the form of this terrific 1994 offering from Gottlieb, whose release was timed to coincide with America’s hosting of The World Cup.
Launched with the strapline, ‘The Sport of the Year becomes the Game of the Decade’, World Challenge Soccer was a 4 player pinball table with a whole bunch of toys thrown in. If the art, by Mitchell and Moore, was a bit middling the play was anything but, with challenging World Cup modes and high scores in the tens of billions!
The table suits all skill levels and has an old school feel, rewarding careful aim with a number of specific targets which must be hit in timed challenges. The flow is great, the multiball relatively easy to achieve, and the animations are excellent.
Overall this is a rather underrated machine and therefore great value for money, especially when you take into account the sturdy build quality and broad family appeal. This example will be undergoing a thorough refurbishment at our workshop.. You don’t have to be a huge soccer fan to enjoy this machine but an appreciation of the beautiful game will keep you in the squad all night long.
The Games Room Company is one of the oldest pinball dealers in the country. Our founder, Reginald Waldersmith, played his first pinball game in 1960, and described it without irony as being “flipping excellent”. We’ve been selling pinball machines since 1962, so know a thing or two about our products! Our showroom will gladly assist you on any questions you may have before or after you purchase any Games Room Company equipment.
