This beautiful 6ft snooker/dining table by E J Riley is crafted from dark mahogany and has a solid, traditional feel which simply exudes quality.
This table has recently undergone an extensive restoration at the hands of our craftsmen, who have also refurbished the ingenious 'rise and lift' mechanism which allows the table to be raised for snooker and lowered for dining. Unlike most contemporary dual purpose tables, this early example has a whole upper section which can be adjusted by the required amount. (modern tables usually just push up with telescopic extensions in the bottom of the legs)
As part of the restoration process we stripped the wood right back to its natural state and commissioned a French polisher to complete the finishing with a dark stain similar to walnut.
High quality Hainsworth cloth, brass pocket mounts and hand stitched leather corner guards have been fitted to ensure that we do justice to this very special piece. E J Riley of Accrington is one of the best known English manufacturers of snooker and billiards tables, with a rich history dating back to the 1890's. Our experts have examined the table and according to the date stamp on the rails it was manufactured in 1956. We have included a few photos showing various stages of the strip down and restoration process, which reveal EJ Riley's own engraving on the top of the legs guaranteeing its provenance.
Our founder, Reginald Waldersmith, first learned to play snooker in Cairo, serving with the 8th Army during the Second World War. He was fond of confusing opponents by telling them they were ‘absolute snookers’, explaining that the term originally referred to an inexperienced army recruit, before it was applied to the game. This intriguing titbit was repeated so often that many of his colleagues eventually memorised his explanation word-for-word. We’ve been selling games tables since 1962, so we know a thing or two about our products! Our showroom will gladly assist you on any questions you may have before or after you purchase any Games Room Company equipment.
