This original WWII Air Raid Warden sign was produced by the War Office c 1940 and stands as a sobering reminder that the perils of yesteryear far outweighed the challenges we're facing today.
On a lighter note however, many of us of a certain age will inevitably be reminded of the indomitable Mr Hodges of Dad’s Army fame, whose character made life a misery for Captain Mainwaring's motley band of misfits.
The classic sitcom, which celebrated its 50 year anniversary in 2018, featured Air Raid Warden Hodges (played by Bill Pertwee) as the epitome of petty officialdom, bellowing such catchphrases as ‘Put that light out!’ and ‘Don’t you know there’s a war on?!’
Where’s Hodges when you need him, barking orders whilst sporting a tin hat with what we always suspected was a deliberately ambiguous ‘W’ on the front? He would have delighted in the role of strutting around breaking up parties with a angry cry of ‘Don’t you know there’s a pandemic on?!’
At the time of writing we have just two of these super signs, which feature raised, stand out silver lettering and were originally issued by the War Office. Despite the patina of age they are in excellent condition, and measure 34cm x 5.5cm.
It's just the thing to boost troop morale as victory draws near the end of lockdown beckons! Are you up for the final push?
