Time Crisis | Games Room Company

The history of one of the world’s most famous arcade machines - Time Crisis!

Here at Games Room Company, we really do have a passion for retro arcade machines. From Pac-Man to Space Invaders, we love them all and are always looking to add to our collection of original, restored machines. One arcade machine that we adore and are constantly searching for is a 1990s classic - Time Crisis! And because we are so enamoured with it, we thought it was likely that many of our lovely customers would also be big fans of this legendary game; so join us as we explore a brief history of Time Crisis….

Time Crisis: The beginnings

Compared to arcade game stalwarts like Pac-Man and Space Invaders, Time Crisis is a relatively new kid on the block. It was first introduced to the adoring public in the USA 1995, when arcade mania was in full swing - most towns and cities could boast at least a few arcades and they were the most popular place for kids to hang out after school. Introducing a new game into this already hugely successful market was a risky little move for creators Namco, but it was one that paid off hugely; as soon as Time Crisis arrived in arcades, it became an instant classic.

How to play Time Crisis

Time Crisis follows on from other popular arcade games from the 1980s and 90s, in that it’s a ‘point and shoot’ style of game. The player can actually hold onto a physical plastic gun, attached to the machine, and use it to control the action on the screen. The aim of the game is to overthrow the authoritarian regime subjecting the fictional society to oppression - of course, along the way there are kidnapped daughters to rescue, enemies to defeat and obstacles to overcome as well!

Time Crisis in modern times

As Time Crisis was a little late to join the ranks of other famous arcade games, there aren’t as many of the old, original arcade machines in rotation as there are for other similar games - especially not in the UK where the game was not quite as popular as across the pond. That combined with the fact that Time Crisis was one of the first arcade games to embrace the changing times and convert to a PlayStation game means the original machines are incredibly difficult to discover; although we always live in hope!
