Everything you need to know before you buy a Shuffleboard

New to shuffleboard? Here’s everything you should know about the classic game!

Shuffleboard is one of the games that we have all heard of at some point, but one that few of us actually know anything about. The name rings a bell, but no answers are coming up. If you’re part of the inner circle who do know all about shuffleboard and love to play, you’re probably sick and tired of trying to explain the rules and history of the game - and also of trying to convince everyone of how much fun it is!

Here at Games Room Company, we are shuffleboard enthusiasts, and so we thought we would take the reigns of the shuffleboard crusade and put together a guide - a kind of ‘everything you need to know about shuffleboard’. So whether you’re a long time lover of the game, or you’ve simply heard the name, you can find all of the facts, figures and history about shuffleboard….

What is shuffleboard and how long has it been popular?

shuffleboard table looks like this:

As you can see, it’s a traditional table game, played with metal or plastic pucks and a smooth wooden table. The aim of the game is to shoot your puck as far along the table as you can, hoping it ends up further along than your opponent manages. It’s the type of game that can quickly become obscenely competitive and raucous!

The first recorded games of shuffleboard in its original forms actually date back to as far as the 1500s in Britain. It originated here and was fairly popular - but it was when settlers took the game over the America in the 1700s tha
t the game as we know and love it today really took off. It seems hard to believe, but in the America during the 1800s, shuffleboard was treated like basketball is today; the public followed it religiously, and every week, newspapers would dedicate column inches to who had won the most recent matches and tournaments and their scores. Public shuffleboard tables were even set up in busy areas for groups of friends to play in their spare time, much like football pitches are today! Even up until the 1950s, it was still one of the most popular sports in the country.

Shuffleboard never really gained as much momentum here in the UK, and in recent years it has been overtaken by slightly more high octane sports on the world stage. But when people get a chance to play shuffleboard, they absolutely love it. We’re constantly amazed that shuffleboard tables aren’t a constant presence in pubs across the country - they would go down a storm!
