Alien attack! It’s up to you to defend Earth as you play the Revenge from Mars pinball machine. Drawing fond influences from the science-fiction B-movies of the ‘50s, Revenge from Mars incorporates absurd and comic elements into its characters and voiceovers. Dot matrix displays render explosions and destroyer beams in careful detail, and a Bill Clinton impersonator is among the quirky features on this machine’s soundtrack.
The playfield lights up with an angry crimson shade as the fury of the Martians rains down on Earth. With nine different gameplay modes to choose from, you can take on the Martians in a variety of increasingly surreal ways – from firing barns at their saucers in ‘Big-O-Beam’, launching watermelons and other obscure projectiles in ‘Paris in Peril’, or simply punching them with a giant, robotic Abraham Lincoln in ‘Secret Weapon’.
Along with ‘Star Wars Episode 1’, this was one of a few machines to feature the 'Pinball 2000' concept, an ingenious new system developed by Williams to marry a computer monitor featuring animations, scores etc with the usual gameplay. This innovation created a clever illusion called ‘Pepper’s Ghost’, whereby the player perceives the on-screen video to be integrated with the playfield. The effect is created by mirrored playfield glass which reflects the monitor installed in the head of the machine. This brilliant integration of pinball and video was inspired by the ‘Asteroids Deluxe’ arcade machine, which used a one way mirror to add a static background graphic to the game's animated vector graphics.
With so many game modes, multiballs and a popular, classic theme, Revenge from Mars is a truly otherworldly adventure!
