Shhhh….We’ve got a crush for you!
Orange Crush was invented in Chicago in 1906 and founded as ‘Ward’s Orange Crush’ in 1916, the brainchild of a California chemist named Neil Ward and entrepreneur Clayton Howel, who had already tried to make a go of it in the orange-soda business with Howel’s Orange Julep.
The brand’s advertising signs, fountain dispensers and thermometers are all prized by collectors but of special interest are the Orange Crush clocks, which as far as we can establish were introduced shortly before 1920 and were manufactured by the renowned clockmaker Seth Thomas.
This stunning example has been painstakingly refurbished and converted to work on a UK power supply but our restorer, who is noted for his perfectionism, found himself unable to choose between bright white bulbs and a softer, creamier tone which emphasises the vintage character of the piece. The answer? Well, before we could stop him he’d installed a system that provided both options and comes with a remote control allowing you to dial in your ‘vintage’ or ‘ultra vintage’ feel!
This fabulous piece, complete with polished chrome frame, is considerably larger than it may appear in these shots and really has to be seen up close to be appreciated. If you’ve got the time to come down and have a look then we’ve got the ultimate vintage time piece for you!
