AMI began in 1909 as the National Automatic Music Co, making automatic player pianos. Having designed a mechanism which allowed music rolls to be selected, this was adapted for use in jukeboxes, the first of which was produced in 1927. The mechanism used was the first that could play both sides of 10 records, allowing 20 selections. Aside from modifications to extend the number of selections, this mechanism was used for the next 30 years.
In the early 1950's AMI were producing Jukeboxes that were decidedly unglamorous. However, all this was to change with the introduction of the 'H' in 1957.
The Continental, another iconic AMI jukebox, was the last AMi designed for the firm before it was taken over. It is also the last jukebox with the legendary AMi analogue sound system. Originally described back in 1962 as "a brilliant performer in the AMI tradition, boldly designed to set a new standard of style" it does not disappoint - even today.
The silhouette is unmistakably distinctive. Clean retro lines are complemented by a magnificent chrome finish, and stunning illuminated colours give it an intriguing and dramatic effect - so desired by designers of the day. The unique panoramic globe design ensures that this truly is "the style of tomorrow, for more play today".
